First Weekers at Akron Better Block
Partnering with the Knight Foundation, Better Block Akron will be revitalizing the area in North Hill between Main Street and Cuyahoga Falls Avenue. Not only will this project be highlighting the possibility this area has, but also the businesses around the area. There will be pop-up shops, volunteers, vendors, along with local nonprofit organizations marketing what they do. Global Ties Akron will be a part of this. Being a part of Better Block gives Global Ties the opportunity to get more people involved with the organization. It is important for us to continue to gain volunteers, donors, and host families and this pop up neighborhood is a great way for us to get our name out the community and show them all the good we do with international students. One of the best programs that we offer is the First Weekers program. This is a program for international students who are planning to attend the University of Akron live with a host family for their first week or so in order to ease them into living here. During this time, they have the opportunity to set up housing for the school year, set up bank accounts, and get to practice their English in a comfortable setting. These host families can become close friends with their international student and this home can be a place for the students to go during holidays when they can not go home to their own families. The host families provide a safe area for the new international students to learn about The United States and hopefully help them adjust to how this country is different from their own. At Better Block, people will have the opportunity to hear about this program along with others that Global Ties offers and could think about hosting an international student in their own home.
